Hollyoaks suspends Parry Glasspool over domestic violence jokes on Instagram
I mean seriously… What was the lad thinking?! 24-year-old actor Parry Glasspool, best known for playing Harry Thompson on Hollyoaks, has been suspended from the Channel 4 soap for a two week period after posting a baffling video on Instagram that appeared to joke about domestic violence.
The inexplicable post saw Glasspool brandishing a knife at the camera while imitating a controlling girlfriend.
“Babe, I don’t mind you talking to other girls, OK. No, actually I would. I would kill you if you did”, he said, before continuing:
“I wouldn’t even know how to with this knife. Actually, I know exactly how to. I’ve done it before and I’d do it again, so don’t even think about it!”
The video was captioned “When girls try and hide their crazy…”, and inevitably sparked a backlash accusing him of making fun of a serious and harmful issue.
Meanwhile, some of the actor’s 88,000 Instagram followers – undoubtedly consisting of many impressionable teenage fans – found the clip amusing, with some even calling for Parry to be given his own sitcom.
Following his punishment from Hollyoaks, which also includes a substantial fine which is being donated to a domestic violence charity, Glasspool has released the following statement:
“I want to say sorry to anyone I have upset or offended. My friends would know that I would never condone domestic violence in any way and I am mortified that people would think that about me.
“My post, made a few months ago, was intended to be a funny take on other videos that I had seen shared on social media but on reflection was not appropriate for my followers.
“It wasn’t meant to be sinister but I can see why it was viewed as such. I will be taking a break from social media.”
Blackpool’s Instagram account has since been taken down.
