The Apprentice 2017: Meet the candidates

It’s that time of year again. 18 would-be entrepreneurs will be taking to our screens to impress business mogul Sir Alan Sugar next Wednesday (October 4). Amongst those hoping to win the top prize are a semi-professional hip-hop dancer, self-described “slightly bonkers country girl” and a former employee of the office of David Cameron.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at this year’s The Apprentice hopefuls.

The Apprentice’s Jessica Cunningham and Courtney Wood confirm they are dating

The Apprentice‘s Jessica Cunningham and Courtney Wood have confirmed a romance.

The series’ candidates had already been linked together whilst filming for the BBC business competition. However, Jessica and Courtney both played down the rumours ahead of the final on Sunday night.

Jessica had previously said: “Oh, don’t believe everything you read in the papers unless it comes from the horse’s mouth! You’ll have to ask Courtney on that one…but no, we’re just good friends.”

A source recently insisted that the pair are in fact together despite Jessica’s claim that they are just “good friends”. Talking to the Daily Mail newspaper, the source revealed that the two of them are actually preparing to go away together for Christmas.

“It’s true, they are seeing one another. And they have booked a holiday, for immediately after Christmas. The relationship is in the early stages though. They are going to give it a go and take it from there.”

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, Jessica confirmed the report and confessed that there was a romance between her and Courtney while they were on The Apprentice.

“To be fair we did have a romance on the show. It is early days now. We are seeing how everything goes.

“He is a good-looking lad. He is charming and considerate.

“We do like each other though and we are just going to take things slowly.”

Unfortunately, Jessica and Courtney both failed in their quest to win Lord Alan Sugar’s £250,000 investment after Alana Spencer was hired as Sugar’s new business partner on Sunday night.

But who needs money when you’ve got love, eh?

The Apprentice will return to BBC One next year for a thirteenth series.

The Apprentice winner Alana Spencer says who she would ‘snog, marry and avoid’ out of fellow candidates

The winner of The Apprentice 2016 Alana Spencer has revealed who she would ‘snog, marry and avoid’ out of her fellow candidates on the show.

The Apprentice series came to an end on Sunday after Alana Spencer was hired as Lord Alan Sugar’s latest business partner. Her ‘Ridiculously Rich’ cake company obviously appealed to Sugar’s sweet tooth as he decided to offer Alana the £250,000 investment over contender Courtney Wood.

The baker has spoken to the Daily Post about her process on the programme and when asked which of the candidates she would ‘snog, marry and avoid’, she replied: “I will snog Grainne, marry Frances and I couldn’t avoid any of them because that would be mean.”

Alana also confessed that she came close to quitting the programme but thankfully her fellow candidates Grainne McCoy and Frances Bishop talked her into staying: “Week three, before the boardroom I was close to walking but I am glad I didn’t. There is a lot of pressure and I put a lot of pressure on myself.

“It was obvious when I got there that the rest of them knew London to a certain extent and had lived slightly more exciting lives than myself. I enjoy living in the countryside and it was strange to go from small town to big city.

“It took me a while to find my feet. We got a brief chat with our family once a week and being able to talk to them pushed me to stay and a couple of the girls really had my back.

“No one was horrendous although sometimes tasks get the better of you, but the really supportive ones were Fran and Grainne and that and my family support kept me going. They were amazing.

“There was a really good crop of women and I think we all got on a lot better than in previous years, in the past squabbles have got in the way of women doing well.

“Because this time there wasn’t that going on we were all able to focus on the challenge and also help each other.”

Since leaving the series, Alana has already secured a deal for a new production unit in Carmarthenshire.

She said: “The Welsh provenance is very important to me and I have already managed to find a factory since leaving the show at Gower View Foods(Cross Hands). There will be a bakery on the side of the factory and production will stay in Wales which is what I wanted.

“It is so important to have this as a Welsh brand because it is where it all started, so it is very important to keep it here.

“I think there is huge potential, the amount I can turnover myself, if you stir that up and have orders across the country then there is massive potential. I will be up in North Wales promoting the brand, we will have ambassadors in the area.

“I can’t believe everything can change so much in a year, it is an amazing Christmas present.”

The Apprentice spoilers: Which candidates crumble under the pressure of the interviews?

It’s time for that one task the candidates dread but viewers love to watch: The Apprentice interviews air tonight.

Five candidates are currently left standing in the race to win Lord Alan Sugar’s £250,000 business investment but by the end of tonight’s penultimate episode, only two will remain to battle it out in Sunday’s final.

To help Sugar decide which two candidates deserve to stay, his trusted advisors Claude Littner, Claudine Collins, Mike Soutar and Linda Plant are here to help with the interview process. And it looks as though they are as unforgiving as ever this year…

Alana Spencer, Courtney Wood, Frances Bishop, Grainne McCoy and Jessica Cunningham will be given a mere 24 hours to prepare for the grilling before they are taken to one of London’s tallest offices, the Leadenhall Building.

The final five better memorise every meticulous detail of their business plan and resume because Claude, Claudine, Mike and Linda will be looking to nitpick anything they can find. And they certainly won’t be showing any mercy should the candidates decide to crumble.

In one scene from tonight’s show, Claudine is not the slightest bit amused when she reads Courtney’s questionnaire, in which he admits that he would ‘fart in a lift full of supermodels’ if he knew he wouldn’t get caught. Oh dear.

Elsewhere, Frances leaves Linda lost for words in their interview while Claude says of her business plan: “It looks like it’s been thrown together, it’s appalling”.

Alana’s business plan is also under attack as Claude expresses his concern over her refusal to invest properly in her own company. After Alana admits that she is eager to save money instead, Claude bites back, saying: “It’s a commitment, and it’s got to be your commitment.”

Meanwhile, Jessica returns a broken woman after her interview with Linda: “She ripped me to absolute shreds; I’ve left my dignity on the 42nd floor.”

Clearly, no one is safe. But who will be able to keep it together and impress the almighty Lord Sugar before they return to the boardroom?

Former Apprentice star Nick Hewer suggests the series is a fix

Lord Sugar’s former aide Nick Hewer has reportedly suggested The Apprentice chooses candidates based upon their appearance.

The television presenter and former PR consultant told The Sun that bosses at the Beeb made suggestions on who ought to be eliminated on the show based on physical appearance.

He said: “I say to [Lord Sugar], ‘Oh, by the way Alan, the blonde: he or she is as thick as a fridge door, and I urge you with every fibre of your being, get rid of them, because they’re going to let you down’.”

“And the producers will say, ‘Do you think you could find it in your heart to not get rid of the blonde just yet?'”

According to Hewer, it wasn’t just during the elimination process that producers stuck their oars in. Reportedly, the selection process was also based upon the candidates’ looks.

Hewer said: “There was a time when all the young ladies who came on wore black pencil skirts and very high heels, with their hair done up in a chignon.”

“You might say, ‘Are these the brightest people with the best prospects?’, and I would say, ‘No, not necessarily’.”

“If you really got the brightest kids the danger is that no-one would understand what they’re doing. What would happen – because this is how it happens – is it would be on BBC 14 at 3am, with six viewers, and the commissioning editor would be taken out of his office, led by the elbow to a brick wall, where he would be machine gunned.”

The BBC were quick to refute the claims made by Hewer, telling The Sun: “All firing decisions throughout The Apprentice are down to Lord Sugar’s own judgement, and solely based on his opinion about who he believes should be fired after every task.

“The Apprentice is a serious business reality series; the winner will be in partnership with Lord Sugar and therefore needs to have the relevant credentials.

“References are checked for business and education credentials and a business consultant is involved at audition stages. In addition to this, Lord Sugar sees the CVs during final selection process. To say that candidates are chosen purely for their looks or single lines on their CV is not true.”
