Remembering Prince through his top TV appearances
Pop legend Prince, who died yesterday at the age of 57, was a genius when it came to genre-blending and performance. On top of his unique musical sound, the artist’s unmistakable look and demeanour made him absolutelthey captivating to watch on the stage and screen. So in loving memory of the beautiful soul lost far too soon, we’re looking back at our favourite of his TV appearances.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions (2004)
Paying tribute to George Harrison alongside Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood and Harrison’s son Dhani, Prince blew us all away with his effortless guitar solo at 3:27, before throwing the guitar and walking off like it’s nothing. Dhani Harrison’s incredulous grin at being there to witness it is exactly what we look like right now.
The Grammys (2004)
Prince and Beyoncé. Performing Purple Rain. Together at the Grammys. Plus Baby I’m a Star, Crazy In Love, and a whole lot more. It’s absolutely stunning, and you need to re-watch it now.
Super Bowl XLI (2007)
It’s been called one of the greatest halftime performances of all time, and quite rightly so. Appearing in a cloud of smoke as an insanely intense rain storm drenched everyone in attendance at the Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, there was no better setting for Prince’s energy to light the place on fire. Purple Rain coming in at 8:25 will never not give us chills.
Muppets Tonight (2007)
Prince adopted a flawless Southern accent to take on a country hick-style character named Jed and sing a song called “Raspberry Sorbet” in this comedic sketch. We later see a Muppet version of the artist as he performs one of our favourite rare gems, “Starfish and Coffee”. Pure magic.
The View (2010)
If anyone knew how to make an entrance, it was Prince. The singer/God’s gift to women surprised the hosts and the crowd of The View by showing up live on air and presenting them with tickets to his show. Look at how Sherri Shepherd edges ever closer to him while struggling to breathe. “I have wanted to make love to you for my whole life”, she says, causing Prince to make a speedy departure from the stage.
Saturday Night Live (2014)
He actually appeared on SNL three times in his career, but it was in this eight-minute epic medley in 2014 that Prince defied the laws of the live sketch show musical performance. The way he handled those face-melting riffs, just… I can’t.
New Girl (2014)
Nick and Jess look about as stunned as we were to find out New Girl had somehow managed to get Prince on board for a guest spot. In this much anticipated episode which aired after the Super Bowl in 2014, Prince offers Jess some love advice. “Anything beautiful is worth getting hurt for”, he tells her, touching us all in places we didn’t know existed.
Here’s to the one and only Prince. He will be greatly missed.
