Galentine’s: 5 strong independent TV women
Girls, have you had enough of the pink hearts, fluffy teddy bears and general over-commercialisation of a pointless, capitalist holiday created to force those in relationships to feel guilty about not expressing their love expensively enough and those who are single to question how they could possibly have a successful, normal life without a loving partner… sorry, what was I talking about again?
Oh yes, Galentine’s.
If you want to avoid the soppy TV offerings of romance, here are five women to watch to help you remember that you are a strong independent woman and commercial holidays mean nothing to you.
Leslie Knope – Parks and Recreations
Amy Poehler plays bureaucrat Leslie Knope – a perky, no-nonsense woman who knows what she wants in life. In true Leslie style, she even hosts an annual event for her gal pals on 13th February: Galentine’s Day. As the woman herself says, “it’s ladies celebrating ladies”. We totally agree it should be a national holiday.
Jessica Jones – Jessica Jones
Bad-ass to the core, Jessica spends her days drinking and only takes her job seriously when she wants to. Throw in to the mix Kilgrave, her mental ex-boyfriend, and we really get to see Jess doing what she does best: kicking butt.
Kimmy Schmidt – The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
As the name says, this girl is tough. After spending 15 years in a cult, Kimmy restarts her life in New York City. An energetic bundle of enthusiasm and rainbows, Kimmy tries to approach everything with a smile and teaches us to go out and love life.
Lorelai Gilmore – The Gilmore Girls
Sassy as pie and with an obscene coffee addiction, Lorelai is our kind of woman. Pregnant at 16 she had to raise daughter, Rory, on her own and instead of crumbling under the pressure, she just made a brilliant mini version of herself. This fast-talking, kooky lady is an inspiration to all weirdos. Oh how we cannot WAIT to get Lorelai back in our lives in the Netflix reboot.
Carla Espinosa – Scrubs
Carla is a mother, a wife, a nurse and an all-round latina ball of fire. Whilst she is in a loving and committed relationship with her husband Turk, that doesn’t mean she isn’t one of the strongest, most independent ladies strutting the halls of the Sacred Heart Hospital. The only woman who can truly put Dr. Cox in his place and bring Turk to his knees, we applaud you Carla.
Happy Galentine’s ladies!
