Who will Johnny Depp play in Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them?
Johnny Depp is set to appear in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them franchise, according to Deadline.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star will reportedly make a small cameo in the first film of the series, which is scheduled to be released on November 18, before playing a larger role in later editions of the blockbuster series.
Naturally, the casting of Depp has caused quite a lot of speculation over social media as to the role he will be playing. Of course, it could be some random newcomer to the series we don’t yet know a lot about, such as Newt Scamander’s muggle American friend Jacob, but the internet has some more interesting ideas.
Fansite Hypable reports that Depp is portraying a character integral to the lore of the original Harry Potter series, who appeared in person in the series about the boy wizard that made J.K. Rowling famous.
Are you ready? Apparently Depp has been cast in the role of Gellert Grindelward, the wizard who was basically the Big Bad in the Harry Potter world before Voldemort. He was famously defeated by former best friend Albus Dumbledore in 1945, who was left broken-hearted by the exploits of his former comrade.
Grindelwald, played by Michael Byrne, appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where he was questioned and killed by Voldemort in a vision witnessed by Harry. A young Grindelwald also appeared in flashback form, in which he was played by Jamie Campbell Bower.
Fans have speculated that Grindelwald may play a role in the Fantastic Beasts films since J.K. Rowling announced last month that the franchise will consist of five films. While the series begins in 1920s New York, seemingly far from Grindelwald’s heyday, it certainly would have time to cover the villain’s rise to prominence through the tale of magizoologist Newt Scamander and friends.
