Emilia Clarke is “really annoyed” by continued obsession with sex scenes in Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones‘ star Emilia Clarke has voiced her frustrations at the way in which people fixate on nudity displayed on the show.
The actress, who plays Daenerys Targaryen on the HBO series, has admitted the Game of Thrones sex discussion can get “really annoying”, as sex should really not be seen as such a big deal in this day and age.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, she explained how this ongoing obsession actually undermines the importance of sex in contemporary artworks, such as Emmy-winning series The Handmaid’s Tale.
“I’m starting to get really annoyed about this stuff now because people say, ‘Oh, yeah, all the porn sites went down when Game of Thrones came back on.’ I’m like, The Handmaid’s Tale? I f**king love that show, and I cried when it ended because I couldn’t handle not seeing it,” Clarke said.
“That is all sex and nudity. There are so many shows centred around this very true fact that people reproduce. People f*** for pleasure – it’s part of life.”
The star continued to critique the way in which the entertainment industry focusses on appearance and the “right look”.
“It got me angry. Well, no, not angry. ‘Angry’ is the wrong word,” she confessed. “But it pushed me into another casting type; forced me to be an actor.
“Instead of playing Juliet and doing the light, airy stuff, I would be the granny who cracks wise, or a down-and-out hooker who has seen better days.”
