BBC to revive Goodnight Sweetheart
The BBC will revive 90s sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart for one episode, as part of its classic sitcom season.
Only Fools and Horses star Nicholas Lyndhurst has agreed to reprise his role as TV repairman-turned-time traveller Gary Sparrow for the one-off, which will air later this year.
Goodnight Sweetheart originally ran for six series from 1993 to 1999. The new episode, which was written by original series creators Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, will reportedly see Sparrow arrive unexpectedly in the 21st century.
Seventeen years ago, the series closed with Sparrow trapped in the past, after spending most of the series travelling back and forth between present-day and the 1940s. How he has escaped this predicament is yet to be revealed.
Goodnight Sweetheart is the fourth BBC sitcom to be revisited for this autumn’s 60 years of laughter celebration, following in the lead of Are You Being Served?, Porridge and the new Keeping Up Appearances prequel.
BBC Comedy commissioning controller, Shane Allen, said: “In Goodnight Sweetheart we have heavy-weight writing and performing talents reunited in this hugely popular and fondly remembered show.
“The conceptual update is sublime and it was heart-skipping stuff to read – it’s an absolute belter.”
