American journalists shot dead during live TV report
A news reporter and cameraman were shot dead this morning (26.08.15) during a live TV report in Virginia.
The victims – who have been confirmed as 24-year-old WDBJ reporter Alison Parker and 27-year-old photographer Adam Ward – were caught up in an attack at Bridgewater Plaza in Bedford County at around 6.45am.
Parker had been conducting an interview with Vicki Gardner, head of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, who was also shot during the attack, and is now in surgery.
WDBJ President and General Manager Jeff Marks announced the news in a live broadcast at 8.45am today:
“It is my very, very sad duty to report that we have determined through the help of the police and our own employees that Alison and Adam died this morning shortly after 6.45am after the shots rang out. We do not know the motive, we do not know who the killer is. I just got off the phone with the state police – they are working very diligently to track down both the motive and the person responsible for this crimes against two very fine journalists.”
Alison’s heartbroken colleague Chris Hurst paid his tributes on Twitter, announcing that the two had been in a private relationship.
“We didn’t share this publicly, but @AParkerWDBJ7 and I were very much in love,” said 6 & 11 Anchor for WDBJ7 Chris Hurst. We just moved in together. I am numb.”
He continued: “She was the most radiant woman I ever met. And for some reason she loved me back. She loved her family, her parents and her brother.
“I am comforted by everyone at @WDBJ7. We are a family. She worked with Adam every day. They were a team. I am heartbroken for his fiancée.”
Meanwhile, producer Shawn Reynolds posted this picture of the colleagues and friends, hitting out at sites that have been circulating videos of the shooting.
