7 Valentine’s Day episodes to get you in the mood
Love is in the air, and on our telly boxes too. Whether you’re a single pringle, in a relationship or “it’s complicated”, you can find true love in your favourite shows.
Here’s a run-down of seven fun and flirty episodes to help you with that loving feeling.
The Simpsons – “I Love Lisa” – S4, Ep 15
Things are looking up for simple little Ralph Wiggum in this episode when Lisa gives him a Valentine’s card that reads “I choo-choo-choose you” (with a picture of a train, pun-tastic). Following what he believes is a genuine declaration of love, Ralph relentlessly pursues Lisa only to have his heart broken. Apparently this was inspired by a real-life event of writer Frank Mula’s life. Sob.
Modern Family – “My Funky Valentine” – S1, Ep 15
This is the first episode in which we meet the glorious and mysterious Juliana and Clive. To keep their love life interesting, Phil and Claire indulge in a spot of roleplaying every Valentine’s Day. Enigmatic businessman Clive Bixby and housewife Juliana meet at a hotel bar and get their flirt on. When “Juliana” returns from the bathroom with nothing but her trench coat on… well, you can imagine the disaster waiting to happen.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer – “Bewitched, bothered and bewildered” – S2, Ep 16
In a classic “be careful what you wish for” tale, Xander gets more than he bargained for. After being unceremoniously dumped by love-of-his-life Cordelia, he employs witch friend Amy to cast a love spell on her. The spell backfires and in fact makes Cordelia the only girl NOT to be in love with Xander. With even Buffy under the spell, how will he get out of this terrible predicament?
How I Met Your Mother – “Desperation Day” – S6, Ep 16
In this heartwarming episode of the sitcom, Barney tells the gang he prefers February 13th to Valentine’s Day as it is when the women of New York desperately scrabble to find a date. Hence the name, Desperation Day. What he doesn’t expect, is that he might find himself more than just a hook-up. Meanwhile, Ted and Zoey battle with miscommunication and Lily misses Marshall so much she begins to spend a lot of time with his substitute, “Marshpillow”.
Friends – “The One with the Birthing Video” – S8, Ep 15
When will a Friends episode ever NOT make a list? In another typically hilarious episode with our favourite pals, Phoebe borrows the birthing video of her friend, Candy, to show to the heavily-pregnant Rachel as preparation. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the desired effect when Chandler, thinking it’s porn, accidentally watches it – he is more than a little disappointed.
The Office – “PDA” – S7, Ep 16
Michael and Holly’s bizarrely sensual public displays of affection are giving everyone the creeps. After a meeting is called to put a stop to it, Holly desists – but Michael can’t help himself. On the most romantic of all days, Jim and Pam discover they’re the only people (apart from Kevin…) who haven’t had sex in the office. They set about changing this, with hilarious results.
New Girl – “Valentine’s Day” – S1, Ep 13
Doing it for the singletons, Jess decides to employ Schmidt to act as her wingman and help her find a one-night stand. Ryan Kwanten (of True Blood fame) guest stars as Jess’ prey, only to eventually disappoint her. Feeling low, Jess almost stoops lower than she ever has before… making her way to Schmidt’s bedroom.
